パンダ発見の日（厳密には、ジャイアントパンダ発見の日）
1869年のこの日、中国四川省の民家で、伝道中のフランス人神父アルマン・ダヴィド (en) が、白と黒の奇妙なクマの毛皮を見せられた。これが、欧米でジャイアントパンダが知られるきっかけとなった。なお、この日を「パンダ発見の日」とするのは日本独自のことであり、学術的に正確な話ではない。パンダの生物学的発見はレッサーパンダが先であり、体格の大きい種が新たに発見されたことによって元々「パンダ」と呼ばれていたものが「レッサーパンダ」、大きいほうを「ジャイアントパンダ」と呼び分けることになり、さらに後者のほうが有名になるに連れて「パンダ」の名が後者の略称のように認識されるに至ったものである。
